Julia Roberts isn’t exactly known for being one of Hollywood’s mean girls.

Even so, the Oscar-winning actress tells us she didn’t hold back while filming her part as the Evil Queen in Relativity’s upcoming fairy-tale flick Snow White.

[I'm] pretty evil,” Roberts dished at last night’s L.A. premiere of her new drama Fireflies in the Garden. In the film, the gorgeous 43-year-old plays a loving and kindhearted mother stuck in an abusive marriage, a far cry from her Snow White alter ego.

“There was like four and a half years between the two parts, so I had plenty of time to rev up,” she smiled.

As for Collins and her onscreen prince Armie Hammer, Roberts says they have “fabulous” chemistry.

“He was great,” Roberts said of working with the Social Network stud. “He was naked a lot in our movie too, so there’s a reason to buy a ticket!”

Meanwhile, Fireflies director Dennis Lee admitted Roberts as the Evil

Queen is a big stretch for him.

“I can’t imagine Julia being evil,” Lee laughed. “I’m sure she’ll be fine. But I have a hard time picturing her being mean. So I can’t wait to see that one onscreen…It will definitely be acting. That’s for sure.”

Cayden Boyd, who plays Roberts’ son (a young Ryan Reynolds) in Fireflies, echoed Lee. “She’s really nice and funny,” he gushed. “She was always making sure that I was OK.”

This week Julia Roberts began filming Relativity Media’s comedy action-adventure Untitled Snow White project with director Tarsem Singh in Montreal.

In the film she plays an evil Queen who steals control of a kingdom, and an exiled princess (played by Lily Collins), before enlisting the help of seven resourceful rebels who help her win back her birthright. The film also stars Armie Hammer as Prince Andrew Alcott, and Nathan Lane as the Queens hapless servant.

But, unlike The Words, the new Bradley Cooper movie which has been primarily filming on location in Montreal, the Untitled Snow White Project will be shot mostly in studio. As we’ve reported, the movie has set up shop at Mel’s Studios where they are taking over five studios at the facility.

Movie star Julia Roberts touched down in Montreal Thursday night, for her upcoming film Snow White by film maker Tarsem Singh, the actress is to play the role of the vicious queen. The 43 years old actress arrived at Mel’s Studios surrounded by bodyguards and heavy entourage.

The production of more than 125M$ is taking over five studios at the facility and the crew will be building Snow White’s village over a 100,000 square foot area. According to the Patron of Studio Mel’s Michel Trudel, who fought intensely for making this production happen in Montreal said filming in Montreal and at Mel’s studio is of great significance.

This is actress’ first visit in Montreal and her three children, the twins Phinneaus Walter and Hazel Patricia ages 7 years and Henry Daniel 4 years are expected to pay a visit following her weeks of filming.

First, let’s break this down: Originally, Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, starring Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron, had set its release date for December 2012. Relativity’s untitled Snow White movie, starring Julia Roberts and Armie Hammer, scheduled its bow for June 29, 2012. Then, in an attempt to beat Relativity to the box office, Universal scheduled Huntsman for June 1, 2012. And now, Relativity confirms that its pushed up its release date to March 16, 2012. Before long, this race to the theaters might just end with audiences catching a Snow White screening by the end of this week.

But will this race to the theaters actually affect which Snow White film will become the fairest of them all? We can look at box office history to fight both sides: Back in 1998, Deep Impact beat Armageddon to the meteor-fueled punch, but the latter film outgrossed Impact by over $60 million. (Impact should have raised Armageddon‘s animal crackers a Circus Animal.) But, as we saw with preacher Harold Camping, we should never underestimate how much American people want to watch our world end. Two films boasting shock-and-awe special effects might find audiences willing to return for a second go-round; two films about a fairy tale character? Though we enjoyed our parents re-reading the tales as children, it’s less likely we would rush to the theater for another helping of Snow White.

After all, even looking at Hollywood’s mass destruction films, the Armageddon formula sometimes misses a thing: Though, in 1997, Volcano arguably had more star power (Tommy Lee Jones, Don Cheadle, Anne Heche) than the previously released Dante’s Peak (Pierce Brosnan, Linda Hamilton), Volcano still grossed almost $20 million less than Peak. But, still, it all depends on the project. Should one of the Snow White parties create an excellent film with good word-of-mouth attached, we’re more likely to be willing to wait for a later release date. It’s about quality, not… when-ity.

Julia Roberts, the Oscar-winning actress who starred in last year’s film, Eat, Pray, Love, wants you to think about food.

Not the eating part — but cooking. And not fancy cooking, either. Roberts has just become a Global Ambassador for the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves.

Her job: to let the relatively affluent half of the world’s population know about the hidden danger facing the more impoverished half: deadly smoke from fuels like wood, coal or animal waste.

Hard to imagine that this is a big problem? Here are some numbers Roberts wants you to know:

• 2 million. That’s how many deaths are caused each year from inhaling smoke from these fuels.
• 16 seconds. That’s how often someone dies from cooking smoke.
• 3 billion. That’s the number of people who have no choice but to use these dangerous fuels because they don’t have access to clean cookstoves.

“Nearly 2 million people around the world – mostly women and children – die each year from an activity that many of us take for granted: cooking for our families,” Roberts said in a statement released today. “I am proud to stand with Secretary Clinton to work to reduce the senseless and preventable deaths from unsafe cooking conditions in developing countries and I look forward to contributing to the important work of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves.”

Roberts learned about the problem — and the solutions — while interviewing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for a Mother’s Day special that will be broadcast on the Oprah Winfrey Network tomorrow, Saturday, May 7th, from 8-9:30 (EDT/PDT). It’s called “Extraordinary Moms,” and Roberts presents the show and was executive producer on it.

Paul Rudd knew that he would be honored at the Oscar Wilde: Honoring the Irish in Film event on Thursday night; he just didn’t know by whom.

Julia Roberts surprised the actor, presenting him with the Honorary Irishman award.

“Maybe I can become Irish,” said Roberts, poking fun at the irony that Rudd was actually born to Jewish immigrants from England. “My middle name is Fiona, which is a step closer to being Irish than Paul Rudd was five minutes ago.”

Roberts co-starred with Rudd and Bradley Cooper in a Broadway production of the play Three Days of Rain in 2006.

Julia Roberts was handed the American Society of Cinematographers’ (ASC) Board of Governors Award, given “to individuals who have made extraordinary achievements to advancing [sic] the art and craft of filmmaking.” Previous recipients of the award include Warren Beatty, Francis Ford Coppola, Sally Field, Morgan Freeman, Ron Howard, Sydney Pollack, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg.

ASC awards committee chair Richard Crudo was quoted as saying that Roberts was a good choice because “cinematographers and actors have a special rapport that begins with a mutual trust. Julia brings something extra to that relationship and further elevates what we do with her beauty and grace. She’s a gift to every cinematographer she works with.”

According to TheWrap’s Steve Pond, after receiving the award from Tom Hanks — who made some crack about Roberts being 25 or whereabouts — the star of Eat Pray Love and Erin Brockovich “reprised a joke she made at the Oscars in 2003 when she paid tribute to cinematographers ‘because I know what I look like at 5:30 in the morning.’”
